During my early years my trips to Bali were a lot more important to me than anyone else understood. Bali was the only place that felt like home and I would soak in as much as I could in the limited time I was there.
One of the things that always stayed with me and forever represents that idea of home to me was the simple house-protecting shrine (sanggah pengijeng karang) that can be found on every property in Bali. Offerings would be placed inside to appease those spirits that protect the home from things that would seek to harm the occupants.
Maybe it's this time that I’ve spent isolated in a home that is not my own that moves my mind to this image. Maybe it’s the idea that at this time in my life I still have no place to call home and I create this to bring the protection it offers with me wherever I go.
